Jama Masjid - India has the world’s third largest Muslim population. India’s largest mosque this grand structure was finished in 1656 with two 40m high minarets towering above the landscape. It can cater for a staggering 25,000 worshipers at a time. Tourists can visit for free although there is a charge for cameras. Dress modestly and remove your shoes.
Red Fort - Red Fort is one of Delhi’s most popular attractions. Built with red stone it was the site of the new capital when Shahjahan the Mughal king moved it from Agra to Delhi in 1648. The fort is an interesting mix of Islamic architecture with a Hindu influence. The amazing architecture is matched only by the beautiful gardens, the perfect place to relax on a hot day.
Humayun’s Tomb - Built in 1569 and now UNESCO listed it is the mausoleum of the second emperor of the Moghul Empire. It is often said this stunning Persian influenced architecture was the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
Qutab Minar - The tallest monument in India and highest individual tower in the world, the 71m high minaret was completed in 1200AD. You can climb the 378 steps to the top and get a fantastic view over the city.
Jantor Mantar - A kind of observatory from 1710, jantor mantar is a striking piece of Indian architecture. The unique structure is made up of 14 geometric devices used for measuring time, forecasting weather changes and predicting behavior of planets.
Ugrasen Ki Baoli - This ancient 60m long step well once the lifeline of a community providing water and a social hub. It extends five levels under the ground with areas to relax and cool off. It is now surrounded by the tall buildings of Connaught Place.
Chandni Chowk - At the door to the Red Fort, chandni chowk is the old city’s famous bazaar. Once a place where merchants sold goods to the nobles nowadays you can pick up anything from textiles to a delicious meal and everything in between.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum - The former residence of India’s first female PM has been transformed into a museum and a memorial. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by a bodyguard on these grounds in 1984. You can tour her library and study as well as her private residence to get an insight into one of India’s most revered figures and family dynasties.
Food - Sample some of the delights of one of the world’s favorite international cuisine. Delhi is known for its love of food and as a multicultural city there is a huge variety on offer giving you an opportunity to try several different regional Indian dishes in one place.
National Museum - One of the largest museums in India it holds 200,000 historic artifacts and works of art.
